  1. A man named Langtry came from England and started candle making in the town of Drumshanbo about the year eighteen eighty seven. He employed an agent named Thomas Lee of Aughafin who used to buy the rushes from the people of the locality.
    In order to make the candles, he peeled the rushes and put them to dry in the sun. Then he rolled them in the grease of lard making candles of them.
    Every market day he set up a stall on which he sold his candles.
    He also told me of a man called Patrick McManus of the townland of Acres. This man used to make resin candles. He had a little
