In our grandfather's time, children did not wear any boots. They were big boys and girls before they got any footwear and even then it was clogs were worn. The little boys would not get pants until they were ten or twelve years old. Not like the little boys of today, their hair was let grow quite long and often times worn in plaits. They wore no head dress at all. We must realize they did not look at all any way smart.
