There used to be "faction fights" at that time and it was dangerous to have an enemy. He might belong to a gang that would do serious bodily harm. Masterson bought a cow for £10 from a man who belonged to one of these parties. When the bargain was made he brought the seller of the cow into a public house to have a drink and was surprised to find that all the money he had
