The daughter of Erasmus Smith married Mr Barry who took the name Smith Barry and afterwards got the title Lord Barrymore. - Athassal Abbey was founded by the De Burgos. Athassel Abbey was built on the bank of the river Suir about 1 1/2 miles west ward from Golden. When the monks were leaving Athassel Abbey they went along the under-ground passage in single file and reached Hoar Abbey by the underground passage. They forgot an important manuscript and they passed the word from the first to the second and so on until it came to the last monk and he brought it with him.
