- In spring the farmers sow the potatoes. They are grown in all parts of Ireland. The potato was grown in Youghal in County Cork. It was Sir Walter Raleigh that sowed them. Sometimes they sow them in ridges and at other time in drills. They plough and harrow the land first. They they put out manure. They spread the manure along in the furrows. They they cut the potatoes. They leave an eye in each part. They spread them and then they cover them over with clay, with the plough. Sometimes they make ridges.
