  1. Marriage in olden times nearly always took place in shrovetide. It was the merriest time of the year between match-making and the fine weddings. It was a real jolly time for indeed the weddings were something not to be forgotten with singing, dancing, music and feasting of the best. The bride cake was cut and passed around with plenty of punch which was the usual drink. The bride's dress was of much importance. It was made of expensive
