  1. We have a very old churn at home. It is a barrel-churn. There are many old sayings attached to churning. If a person came in when the butter was being made and took a coal out of the fire it was a sign that the fairies would take the butter.
    When we were making butter we got the cream of the top of the milk and put it into the churn. Then we twisted the handle until the butter was made. Then we took it out and made a lump of it. Then we salted it.
