- Long ago the people had no doctors. They made up cures for pains, wounds, and sicknesses themselves. If anyone had a toothache they got a certain piece of an alder and rubbed it to the tooth. If the happened to get a burn, they would search for a certain leaf called "hounds-tongue". It is a long green leaf about as big as a dog's tongue.
