    Local Happenings
    The "Old Castle" situated some two hundred yards from Portumna, was in 1820 burned accidentally when a clothes horse took fire. There was a brave attempt made to extinguish the flames but owing to the roof being covered with lead the people had to abandon the castle when the lead began to melt.
    The Clanrickardes, the family who resided at the castle reared a faithful dog who raised the alarm when the house took fire and when he died at the age of thirteen, they buried
