  1. Munster and Connaught used to hurl in the Town Tenants' Callows. They used to hurl the ball across the Shannon. That was their goal post. They had 21 men on each side and the team which succeeded in putting the ball across the Shannon the oftenest won the day. The ball was made of very heavy leather. The hurleys were like the present hockey sticks and they were made of ash.
