- Athassel Abbey was built on the right bank of the Suir by De Burgho. There are a lot of ruins in it now. It is said that there was an under-ground passage leading from Athassel to Cashel. When it was burnt by Cromwell's soldiers the soldiers went to along the passage found that they were blocked and could not go. It is said that on dark nights there is a light seen there minding the beautiful ornaments the monks hid there.
