- We have a very old churn at home. It is a barrel churn. We do not make any butter now. We send the milk to the creamery. To make butter you must take the cream from the top of the milk, and put it into the churn and twist it until it is made. An old saying is that if a man comes in and takes a coal out of the fire, it is a sign that the fairies would take the butter. When it is made, it is put into pans, and the milk that is left over is called butter milk.
