  1. Another custom was, when an animal would die to cut off a bit of the leg and hang it in the chimney The leg would be cut below the knee and hung up in the chimney and left there. That was to prevent Black Leg and disease. Down in Grove View I saw it myself hung in the chimney. It must have been there for years for there was nothing left but the bone.
