- The people long ago had many ways of knowing when bad weather was coming. Some of the signs are - swallows flying low, soot falling from the chimney, when the west is very dull, crickets squeaking. There are many signs when good weather is coming, when the sky is bright, when the sun sets brightly, when the west is clear. The sign for a storm is when the sea-gulls come in from the sea.
