- In former times, people made candles from rushes and oil. A man from Beaghbeg named Mahon made baskets from sallies. Hugh O'Neill from Carrigaline made nails and spades. He made nails and from nail-rod. There was a lot of spinning and weaving done in the district. When the wool was taken off the sheep's back, it was washed. Then it was spun, and then woven,andthen dyed.
People thatched their own houses long ago. The houses were thatched with straw and "scollops". The straw was pulled and the "scollops" were put across. When cows died, the people took off the skin and brought it to a man called a tanner. He made the skin into leather. There lived a man in Cornafest long ago, named Kieran who tanned skin.
Jim Kiernan of Carrigallen makes barrels and churns. No whips were made in my district long ago.
