    Thus were we baffled, but not beat, sore stricken, but not slain
    Without the walls we quickly dressed our shattered ranks again
    While like the lion wounded deep, our rage by stronger burned
    As with one wild soul-breathing cheer we to the fight returned

    Before a storm of leaden hail our foremost ranks were mown
    But ere the foe could load again our pikes had borne them down
    And those who fell, not broke and fled, like frighted deer, away
    Tho' Fairgate and the market house still grimly stood at bay

    But now the curse that marred us once again misled our men
    And backwards forced with broken ranks we lost the ground we gained
    Again with weakened force we charged tro' streets of blood and fire
    And bath'd our pikes in foemen's blood before we did retire
