There was a devil of a hardy fellow around here wan time...

There was a devil of a hardy fellow around here wan time, and nothing was supposed to frighten him. He'd be afraid of nothing.
Carroll and another fellow by the name of Tom Kelly were out this night looking at snares they had set. There was a devil of a big shower come, and their two pulled in under a bush for shelter.
What happened to come along but this hardy fellow, and he got in under the same bush from the shower and he never saw Carroll & the lad and they right behind him.
This fellow took out his pipe to take a smoke, and he cracked a match to light it. Carroll was standing right behind him, and he took out his pipe. He put his hand on the lad's shoulder: "Dont let that out" says Carroll.
Ou! Ah! Ou! says the lad & he gave a jump about ten feet. He damn near died where he was.
