  1. Local Marriage Customs
    In Shrove most people get married. Shrove extends from Christmas until Ash-Wednesday.
    May is said to be a very unlucky month for people to get married in. There is an old saying that "Those, who marry in the month of May, will surely live to rue the day." People never marry in Lent or Advent.
    In this country matches are usually made by the parents of the young Money is always given as dowry now-a-days, but long ago cattle and goods were given.
    In olden times people were married in their own homes. My great-grandmother was married in her own home about a hundred - years - ago.
    A wedding feat is usually held in the bride's home or in a hotel.
