    When John noticed five or six rats...

    hurry about, but John said that he had to be at a certain place in about half an hour and never thought of it until he looked at the clock. That was a fairly good excuse so he started for the road again.
    The next house that John saw was a little small cabin and he went in. There were two old people sittin at a table and they eatin' their supper. John told them who he was and what he was doin' an' where he was goin' an' all about himself sayin' that he was very hungry an' would like something to eat. The old woman got up an' went over to the fire and lifted up the teapot and says she "begor there is enough a tay on this for you an the best thing you can do is sit down and have
