- There were no factories in this district but some of the articles needed were made in the houses.
Before Parrafin oil was introduced there were different kinds of candles made locally. One was called a 'tallow' candle, the other was called a 'rush' candle.
The tallow candle was made from animal fat or grease which was poured into an iron mould or tube with a cotton tread drawn through the mould for a wick. When the grease froze the candle was made.
The rush candle was made from rushes known as bull rushes, which grow on the edges of lakes and rivers or in marshy land. The skin was peeled off them and then they were dipped.(continues on next page) - Collector
