  1. Long the Irish people suffered for their education and the masters, if they were found teaching were put to death.
    There was a school in Cournagee, near my home, where a Master McGowan taught the youth of the district.
    At another time a school was held in my home and another Master McGowan taught there for some time.
    The children wrote on slates and there were no blackboards or copies. The teacher called out all the lessons and th pupils did what was needed.
