  1. Long ago, the people used to kill something before every feast day. Before St. John's Night they used to kill a fowl or an animal, and have it for their dinner on that day.
    The girls used to sew a dress, and make up a false woman and go about from house to house on St. Brigid's Day, collecting pence.
    The past-time the boys had long ago was making tops out of wood and fishing.
    The girls used to be making dolls and making dresses for them.
    The big people used to play cards and sing songs.
