  1. Long ago the old people used to bake their bread on a leaf of cabbage. They used first pull out the coals on the hearth to heat it up. Then the coals were put back in the fire, and the hearth swept very clean. A leaf of cabbage was left on the swept-up hearth, and the cake was placed over it, and coals put around it. After some time, it was turned upside down, and left there until it was baked.
