- In olden times the people of this district had the belief that it was unlucky to give goods on credit on Monday. The reason for this was if they lent on Monday they would have to lend all through the week.
In some parts of this locality it was the custom to exchange goods for labour. For example: if one man had no hay another man lent him some and in payment for this he went and worked with the other man for a few days.
About sixty years ago it was not an unusual sight to see a man, called a pedlar, trudging along from house to house with a large bundle of drapery on his back. He carried a flat piece of wood, called a yard stick, and with that he measured yards of cloth. He gave cloth in exchange for horse hair, jampots and bottles.
A pedlar, named Thady Conway, used to visit this district fortnightly and lodge in a house belonging to Patrick Maguire. He generally came on Saturday and remained until Monday. In payment for his lodgings he gave cloth to make dresses for a little girl who lived in the house.
It is still the custom that when a person sells an animal at a fair the seller(continues on next page)
