    The Blessed Virgin was not able to walk very far, so she had to ride on an ass and the Child Jesus before her. Ever since, there is the Sign of the Cross on the side and back of the ass.
    People say that the ass is blessed. They also say, if you had an ass with you on a journey no misfortune would befall you.
