- We always decorate the houses with holly and ivy at Christmas because Christmas will last for ever and holly and ivy are evergreens. On twelfth night we light twelve candles and we give each of them a name and whichever one burns out first will be the first to die. On St. Bridget's Eve we put up a little cross on the roof of the house, it is supposed to keep away sickness for the year.
On St. Patrick's day we wear shamrocks because St. Patrick took up the shamrock to explain the mystery of the Blessed Trinity to the people. We put up a May bush on May day to bring luck to the crops. We light a bonfire on St. John's night. It is an old custom to put the ashes of the bonfire on the crops to bring luck(continues on next page)- Collector
