- Over eighty years ago there was a school carried on in a waste outhouse belonging to a farmer in Lislea, Dromahair. The teacher of this school was Patrick McHugh. Each child attending it had to subscribe five shillings quarterly for his education.
The subjects taught there was English reading up to fourth class. Writing, spelling and arithmetic. English was spoken in the teaching of subjects, as the Irish language would not be allowed to be taught in Ireland at that time.
The English reading book used for first and second class was called "Reading Made Easy" and the English reading book used for third and fourth class was called The Sequel. The only method they had for writing was with a slate pencil on a slate. The teacher had no special dwelling house, and he used sleep in his pupils houses at night.
