- Long ago people used to make candles on the twelfth night after Christmas. Before the twenty fifth of December they gathered rushes, and left them to wither for a short time. Then they peeled all the skin off them except a small piece.
Next they got a candle pan and melted a piece of fat and dipped them in it. Then they burned them immediately. Candles were also made from grease and rushes. The grease was shaped like an oven, and the rushes were left about two feet long. They were then set down in the grease until they burned out.
People in this district used to make whips in the olden times. First they used to get three pieces of thin leather and pleat them together. Then they tied them to a stick about four feet in length.
Baskets were made from thin rods which were first boiled in water and then sent to the basket maker. He then made the basket, and hung it over the fire to let it dry before he sold it. Those baskets were made by a man named George Elliot who lived in Knockacullion.
