  1. Over fifty years ago the art of soap making was carried on in many houses in this part of the country. The soap was made up of fat to which a small quantity of lye was added. The fat was first boiled and strained, then the lye was mixed with it, and both were boiled again. It was then allowed to cool, and when properly set it was fit for use.
    The old people used make candles from rushes in former times. They first cut the rushes, then they took the green skin off them, and held them before the fire to dry. After that they were soaked in grease and they were then ready for use. In olden times they also used to dye woolen material by means of copperas and logwood.
    Pat Sweeney, who lived in Gortnacarkogue, made rush candles in olden times for his own use. He also was basket maker. Old Mrs. Moran was great spinner of flax and wool.
