  1. There was an old school in Gurteenaheerin about eighty years ago. It was situated about three miles from the village of Killargue. It remained there until Mullaghduff school was built. It was formerly a dwelling house which was built on the side of an old lane.
The remains of it are still to be seen. John Kelly and John McKeon taught there. The subjects taught were Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Arithmetic. There was no Irish spoken in school but the old people used to speak it at home. The children used to write with quill pens that the teacher made for them.
They also wrote with slate pencils on slates. Long ago the was an old school in Tullynasharragh. The teacher taught in his father's house which was a long distance from the road. The pupils were taught Composition Writing, Letter Writing and Arithmetic.
There was no Irish taught in any hedgeschool at that time. There were no pens or pencils to write with. The scholars were taught to write on slates. The only books that were used were English Readers and Arithmetics. The parents of each family attending the school had to pay five shillings to the teacher.
