straggling Planters who heard the news of his narrow escape from death.
Gilrane went for Ballinamuck along with a party of men the names of whom were Paddy Mc Girl, Clerhawn More, Ballinaglera and Mc Greal from Stranagarvana who was killed in action at Ballinamuck. There were many others whose names I have not heard killed and some were executed on the field after the defeat of the French and Irish.
Gilrane escaped and came back home accompanied by two French soldiers. He constructed a hiding place for himself and his comrades in Druminafinnla (parish of Ballinaglera, Co. Leitrim) bog which is now in the possession of Mr. Myles Mc Hugh of Druminafinnla. They were in hiding there for some weeks and were all the time expecting news of a ship leaving Sligo on which they could sail for France. Being tired waiting and surrounded by danger on every side, Gilrane, dressed in his "Cotá Mór", with his French comrades, faced for the coast from Dernageer Hill. They went north and never was a word heard of what happened to them. Whether they got to France or not is a mystery. It was believed that they were captured by wandering soldiers and done to death.
Gilrane's living relatives are James Gilrane, Dernageer, Thomas Gilrane, Dernageer, Terence Gilrane, Dernageer, Myles Gilrane, Corralubber, John Gilrane, Corralubber and Stephen Gilrane, Greaghnafarna.
