- A Hazel StickFirst the stick is cut. The branches are taken off it and it is put up on the loft over the fire. The heat of the fire seasons the stick and makes it light. When it is seasoned it is taken down and brushed with a brush. It is polished with some brown polish to make it shine. It is put up on the loft again for some time. Then it is taken down and polished again. This is done three times. At the end of the third time the stick is fit for use.

- Griddle CakeGriddle cakes are baked on a grid like a pan and flat on the bottom, with no sides on it and two handles. The oat cakes are baked on bread irons. The bread irons were made by a blacksmith. It was made with a square piece of iron and another piece of iron about two inches wide along the bottom of it and a thin iron support at the back to hold it up. The oat was baked at the front of a bright fire. Oat bread is not used so commonly now as it was long ago. Oat read is made from oat meal. A pinch of salt is added. It is wet with luke warm water. When it is very firm it is baked.
