- Old HousesLong ago the houses were made of mud. Rushes were mixed with the mud to make it stick. The houses were round like a cornstack and thatched with straw or rushes. A hole was left in the top of the house to let out the smoke and the fires of sticks were burned in the middle of the floor and the people sat round it on sheaves of rushes or wooden stools. The lights they used were rush candles. The rushes were pulled green, then the green was peeled off and they were tied together and hung in the chimney to dry. The people got resin from the bark of a larch tree melted it and dipped the rushes in it. When the resin was firm the candles were fit to be burned. They used mats to close the doors at night. The beds were like a press and the shape of it built in the wall and a little door in front (to) for the person to get in. This was called a "Pouch"
