- About twenty years ago in almost every farmhouse was a settle. It was a seat by day and a bed by night. It was about six foot long and four foot wide when opened as a bed. The seat was on hinges and closed in with a strap or sometimes with wire hinges. The bed clothes consisted of a linen sheets a home made blanket a quilt a druggest quilt and a patch
